LEJOG D5

Still with the headwind, changes tomorrow.  Hmmm,  heard that before.
Also still with the hills,  but always knew they'd be there.

I deviated from the true course today to do two things. Rode a short distance off a road to see the Stem bridge Tower Windmill, a thatched stone structure well worth the detour. Then decided to ride through Glastonbury as our path skirted it.  No,  I didn't go up to the Tor as I had enough up today without that.  Going down the main street was like riding through Nimbin on a bad day.  Badly dressed hippies sitting on the footpath,  more ships selling cheap rainbow clothes than you would deem necessary giving it a generally shabby look.  Maybe I misjudged it - I did only ride through.

To get there however I rode through a couple of nature reserves which was wonderful for two reasons. First I was off the road so no car nearby, second because they were big and full of bird song.  Beautiful spot,  and when I emerged the well marked bike path into G was along a beautiful shaded path then back streets all the way.

Leaving G  rode up a killer hill then down a great downhill to get to the main road to Wells.  Spoke to a couple of locals who gave me a back route so avoided the main road again.  Good days ride.

Got to town in time to shower and saunter over to dinner with a walk afterwards to have a look at the cathedral in the setting sun. More beauty and I am sorry not to spend an entire day in the Bishop's palace and gardens which look magnificent.

Would love to get on the road earlier than we do, but that's sadly not going to happen. Our leader keeps our Garmin devices loaded with maps until nearly 9 - a very effective way of controlling us. We've all tried and we are ready to go champing at the bit.
